I had a middle-class upbringing in Newark CA, an east-bay suburb of San Francisco. My father, brother and I fished for cod in the ocean, catfish in the delta, sturgeon and striped bass in the bay, salmon in the Sacramento River, and hunted ducks and pheasants over golden retrievers throughout the central valley and Northen California.
A random series of events landed me in Missouri after I left the Army in 1981. My new adopted home state fit me like a glove. I bought and trained a golden (Josie), and joyously returned to hunting. Once I added deer and turkey to the mix and got involved in conservation activism, it ballooned into a huge part of my life.
In recent years Jane and I bought a 400-acre farm near Moberly Missouri, on which we hunt deer and turkey, raise grass-fed Scottish Highland Cattle, and grow hay and soybeans.
